FANWOOD/SCOTCH PLAINS — Zachary Rittner, the founder and head of the environmental science department at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School (SPFHS), will be hosted by the College Club of Fanwood-Scotch Plains on Monday, March 18.
Mr. Rittner will provide a presentation on the Conservation in the Classroom program that helps to connect students with their local watersheds, ecosystems and biodiversity based in the environmental science classes at SPFHS. The program will take place at the Fanwood Presbyterian Church, located at 74 S. Martine Avenue (McDermott Street entrance), and will begin at 7:30 p.m. It is free and the public is invited to attend.
Mr. Rittner received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y.; his Master of Arts in Teaching at Montclair State University and a Master of Science in Environmental Science from Montana State University. He is completing his 10th year of teaching and recently was recognized as a “NJ Exemplary Educator” by the New Jersey State Department of Education.
Mr. Rittner’s classroom focuses on providing students with authentic, meaningful experiences meant to inspire them to not only become lifelong learners but also to become the next generation of environmental stewards. Conservation in the Classroom consists of multiple wildlife head-start programs, including trout, terrapins, quail and the SPFHS native ecosystem. He will describe some of the varied, hands-on experiences that he has shared with his students.
