WESTFIELD — Three police officers have been injured as the result of a motor vehicle pursuit involving a stolen car that was attempting to travel out of Westfield and into Garwood.
According to information provided by Chief Christopher Battiloro of the Westfield Police Department, the station was alerted to the presence of a motor vehicle displaying stolen tags by one of the town’s new License Plate Reading cameras late Thursday afternoon.
“A patrol officer located the vehicle in question and attempted to stop it, but the driver refused to stop, and a pursuit ensued,” the chief said.
The vehicle, which entered Westfield on Central Avenue and continued down North Avenue towards Garwood came to an abrupt halt when the driver and sole occupant of the car pulled into a gas station and behind a building that offered no access route back out to the road.
The pursuing officers followed it.
A collision with the vehicle and two pursuing police vehicles occurred behind the building.
Three officers were injured during the incident.
“All three officers were transported to an area hospital. One sustained a laceration to his arm that will require stitches. The other two officers were injured by shattered glass,” Chief Battiloro said.
The driver of the vehicle has been taken into custody.
The vehicle being pursued was confirmed stolen out of Philadelphia, PA.
The investigation into this incident is on-going. The Westfield Leader will provide updates as the situation develops.
