John T. Scanlon

John T. Scanlon, 88, Devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather and Man of Faith

John T. Scanlon, 88, of Mountainside, N.J., formerly of Scotch Plains, N.J., departed peacefully from this life on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, only 90 days following the passing of his wife, Dorothy. They would have been married 65 years on June 20, 2024.

John was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to John T. and Genevieve (Soberoski) Scanlon. John attended St. Edmund grammar school, St. Augustine High School in Brooklyn and Manhattan College. John graduated with his MBA and became a CPA, working in private accounting for Smith Barney (Citibank) for over 35 years. He also became a test examiner for the CPA Board tests.

As a young man, John met Dorothy Terranova in their Brooklyn neighborhood, fell in love and married in June, 1959. They began raising their four daughters in Great Kills, Staten Island, just after the Verrazzano Bridge opened, where they lived until 1986. The couple moved to Westfield, N.J., and later to Scotch Plains, N.J. After John’s retirement, the couple spent their winters in Florida as snowbirds until 2018. John served on the board for the HOA, where he lived and was President of the Seniors Club in Scotch Plains for many years. The couple traveled the world together, and enjoyed bowling, golf, cards, gardening and family gatherings. John also dedicated many years of service to the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation, after his grandson, Nicholas, was diagnosed with the genetic blood disorder, Thalassemia. Sadly, Nicholas predeceased him in 2004.

John was devoted to his family and his faith. He leaves behind his four loving daughters, Lorraine Schiano (Frank), Katherine Vilarino (Manny), Joanne Treboschi (Carl) and Elizabeth Paskowski (John), as well as his 11 grandchildren, Stephanie, Andrea, Michael, Jessica, Christine, Victoria, Matthew, Tommy, Jackie, Allie and John, and five great-grandchildren. John and Dorothy loved having movie nights and sleepovers with the grandkids, playing and teaching card games, and taking the older ones to NYC museums and theater. John’s longing to be with his loving wife and his strong belief in God and the afterlife gave peace to his family in his final days. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his life and the wonderful memories we shared with him.

Funeral services were previously held at St. Clare’s Church in Staten Island.
