The Westfield Foundation is deeply committed to fostering inclusivity and accessibility in youth programs. As a proud supporter of Greater Somerset County YMCA (GSCYMCA), particularly in the Plainfield community, through a recent quarterly grant, The Foundation supported opportunities for local youth through after-school and summer camp initiatives like Camp RISE.
Camp RISE is a shining example of this commitment, providing a nurturing environment where every child, regardless of ability, can thrive. This past summer, the camp introduced innovative programs to support neurodiverse campers, inspired by concepts shared by Camp Director Dave Leveille at the 2024 NEYCC workshop on Neurodiversity Day Campers. The “Voice and Choice in Sensory Social Peer Mentorship” approach empowered campers by giving them autonomy in their activities, fostering organic social connections and personal growth.
Key initiatives like the “Peer Buddy” system paired neurodiverse campers with peer mentors, ensuring a supportive network where every child felt included. Additionally, mindfulness programming through spaces like the HIVE and Sensory Lab provided campers with tools to manage emotions and build social skills, contributing to a harmonious and inclusive camp environment.
As we look ahead, the Westfield Foundation remains committed to supporting these inclusive practices, ensuring that every child in our community has the opportunity to feel valued, heard, and empowered.
The Westfield Foundation’s purpose is to promote the betterment of Westfield New Jersey and its surrounding communities by enhancing the quality of life for all of its citizens.
