GARWOOD — On Saturday, November 9 all Garwood residents, as well as those Cranford and Westfield residents who are enjoying the Garwood Green Team’s ongoing rejuvenation of the unnoticed wooded section of Unami Park are once again invited to join the Team at 9 a.m. at the base of Center Street to take part in the next improvement project in conjunction with the Team ‘Adoption of Unami Park’.
This last fall project day of 2024 will include spreading another layer of chips where needed on the Center Street, Garwood to Twins Oak Terrace Westfield path – hopefully using ALL the chips that the Union County Parks Department has obtained and delivered for us. This will enhance the path before any winter storms, reduce weed growth in the path and fix some erosion damage.
The Team also has a 12-14’ Tulip and similarly sized Sweetgum tree to plant, along with numerous native tree seedlings donated by a nearby resident, and others grown at the Team’s tree nursery. These plants will continue our ‘go native’ theme and help provide food for local wildlife. We hope to plant, and enclose these trees with tubing to keep them safe from deer browsing. Finally, we will have a dozen bird houses to mount on 8- 10’ wooden posts donated by Statewide Fencing of Garwood that the Lincoln School Builder’s Club is currently painting. Digging these holes will require some determination! (and post hole diggers!)
Garwood LIDL has agreed once again to provide refreshments for all volunteers, So, let us all hope for good weather, and a successful volunteer effort. Please bring wheelbarrows, shovels, hay forks, rakes, post hole diggers, and any other tools that you think may be of assistance. Union County will be allowing us the use of their tool truck, but additional tools will make for lighter and faster work! Everyone who participates will be asked to sign a waiver from form Union County.
Please contact w-nierstedt@garwood.org if you have any questions. Hope to see you there.
