Legislators Need to Stop Attacking Local Journalism, Instead Invest In It

The Senate Judiciary Committee is currentlylookingtoconsiderabillaimed at addressing the situation in public notices and legal advertisements following the recent shutdown of the Star-Ledger and other print newspapers. On its surface, the legislation might seem logical: it requests that newspapers and digital news organizations provide detailed justification for their receipt of public dollars through legal notices. However, I feel that this bill is very, very misguided, shifting attention toward scrutinizing and potentially penalizing the media instead of addressing the true underlying issue—the urgent need to continue and further invest in journalism itself.
